4 Tips to Wearing a Fedora Without Looking Douchey

In the late 90s fedoras were all the rage. In the 2000s it seemed as though there was one particular group of people who really identified with the fedora and ruined it for the rest of us.  Yes, the fedora has a douchey reputation but it’s time to take it back.  And here’s how we’re going to do it.

1. Choose the right style

First and foremost it is important that you choose the right style.  For most, there is a certain picture that comes to mind when you think fedora.  Pro tip: stay away from that style. A fedora is characterized by a felt hat with a wide brim and indented crown.  We are not sure how the small brimmed straw version retained the same name and ruined it for the rest of the fedoras.

2. Find the right fabric

Felt and wool are great fabric options. Try to steer clear of straw or woven hats unless you happen to be on vacation or at the beach. The fabric gives the fedora a certain class that can be dressed up with a suit or dressed down with denim.

3. Know your sizes

A hat that is too small or too big will look just as bad as a bad looking hat.  We recommend going to a hat store, not a store with a hat section, a real hat store.  There you can try on many different styles and brands to see which looks best on you.  Talk to the shopkeeper.  Chances are he is a hat nerd and is dying to tell you everything you’d want to know about finding the right hat.

4. Act accordingly

Remember Fedoras got their douchey reputation because of the people wearing them not the look of the hat.  If your going to try out this style, show some class.  Maybe we can turn the page and bring the fedora back to the gentlemen’s hat it’s always been.
