Happy Hour: The Romeo and Juliet

A refreshing libation to drop your temperature in this heat wave.

With the weather being so annoyingly hot lately, it’s vital to take every chance you can to cool yourself off with a thirst quenching beverage. One of the best spirits for creating refreshing drinks is gin. Something about the juniper and minty tones contained in the spirit seem to drop our heat levels, which is the goal (even if it’s only mental).

If you’re not someone who likes extremely sweet cocktails, then this is a perfect mix for you with just a bit of natural sweetness that will pair well with a light lunch or start off your evening with a refreshing kick. If you’re comfortable drinking your cocktails up (it retains the flavor longer) then order it this way, but on the rocks is acceptable as well.

What you’ll need:

2 oz Gin

3 slices Cucumber

3 Mint Leaves

Pinch of Sea Salt

.75 oz Fresh Lime Juice

.75 oz Simple Syrup

Rose Water

Angostura Bitters

Add the cucumber slices, mint leaves, and salt into a cocktail shaker and muddle all three together until you’ve got them nicely broken down. Add the gin, lime juice, and simple syrup with ice and shake vigorously for 15 seconds.

If you’re drinking it up, strain the contents into a champagne coup and add 3 drops of rose water as well as 3 drops of Angostura bitters. Garnish with a mint leaf.

If you’re someone who likes pulp, you can ask the bartender to “dirty dump” the cocktail, which means that they wont strain it and the cucumber and mint will be in the drink with the rest of the contents. It’s a fun way to really boost the flavors.
