Eating right at the office can be pretty tough.
If you’re genuinely interested in getting into great shape, you need to know that it takes overall dedication. Being wishy-washy about your diet and exercise will only prolong the distance to your desired results, which increases the likelihood of you getting frustrated and giving up.
If you’re like most people, getting up earlier to prep your meals or prepping for the whole week on Sunday isn’t easy or doable. That’s ok, but you should still be aware of some other tricks available to help you stay as healthy as possible during work. Here are 5 tips…
Pack Healthy Snacks
If you’re working out regularly, it’s totally fine to satisfy your late morning or early afternooon cravings. Just be sure that you’re not heading to the vending machine or office kitchen and grabbing some nasty chips or candy. Keeping things like toasted unsalted almonds, low-sugar protein bars, and fresh fruit at your desk will curb your cravings and keep you right on track.
Walk It Out
Sitting sedentarily at your desk for hours on end isn’t healthy. Try to set an alarm for once an hour to remind you to stand up and move around a bit. Whether that’s a quick lap around the office or just some basic stretches, doing something to get your blood flowing will keep your metabolism boosted.
Water on Hand
If you don’t already own one, invest in a nice big water bottle. The bigger the better because you can just pour it out into a glass if it’s too big to drink straight from. Ideally you should be drinking about 80-120 ounces of water a day, so getting a growler or something large works really well as a gauge of how much water you’ve consumed. If you need something a bit sweeter, use a bit of orange, lime, or lemon in your water to keep it a bit more interesting for you.
Ditch the Cream and Sugar
One of the worst and most common things people do wrong on a daily basis is opting to over-sweeten their coffee. The added calories and sugar intake from cream and sugar is enough to cause an afternoon crash. It’s also something that isn’t necessary if you work on drinking your coffee black. Start to ween yourself off of cream and sugar a little bit each day until you’ve completely left it in the past. Even worse, if you’re drinking a flavored latte every morning, not only are you killing your wallet, but the calories alone are going to take you most of the day to burn off. Black coffee has less than 10 calories.
Have Some Control
If you have a lunch meeting or something forcing you to go out to lunch, don’t feel like you have to eat everything you’re given. Think ahead and wrap half of your sandwich to go immediately so as to remove the temptation and to allow yourself a mid-afternoon snack a bit later. By overeating at lunch you’ll leave your body tired because of the extra work it needs to do to digest your meal. Then you’ll go for an afternoon pick me up coffee and add cream and sugar to it! Consider all of the extra calories you’re taking in because of these behaviors. They add up when this is a daily occurrence.
There you have it! 5 moves that are easy enough to introduce into your daily routine. Don’t force yourself to immediately adopt all 5. Ease them in one or two at a time until they become habits that you’re comfortable with and then work on another. This way you’ll be less overwhelmed and less likely to quit and revert back to your old ways.
