Why are abs important, even under all those layers of turkey, egg nog and pumpkin beer? Here’s why…
That’s right, gents, winter abs! These are those important muscles that will mainly remained covered, not only by your layers of a sweater and a coat but also by the extra food and beverage you’re consuming during these winter months.
The core muscles are extremely important in maintaining your health. Just because you’re not focused on getting them shredded for the beach doesn’t mean you should start skipping abs at the gym. They keep your back strong, which can easily get hurt during snow shoveling or a backyard football game on Thanksgiving. Also, by continuing to work your abs all winter, you’ll have less work to do when it comes summer time!
What To Do
You don’t have to go absolutely crazy on the abs during the winter, but maintaining a certain level of strength will keep you energized and happier than you’d be otherwise. Plus, with these muscles being stronger, you’ll carry those extra winter pounds healthier than you would without the workouts. On abs day, do some body weight exercises like these to naturally strengthen the muscles without trying too hard to build size with added weights.
Alternating Leg Lifts – 3 sets of 20 reps (10 on each leg)
These work the lower abs and the hip flexors.
Super Plank – 3 sets of 20 reps (10 each leg)
Excellent for the lower back and obliques.
V-Ups – 3 sets 12 reps
Works the whole set of upper and lower abs.
Rest for 1 minute between sets, moving quickly through the entire workout. Boosting your heart rate is highly encouraged!
That’s it! Perform these moves 2-3 times a week, with at least one day of rest between workouts. The best part of it is, since you’re only working for strength, not appearance, you can eat whatever you want (within reason)!
