Don’t worry, it’s happened to the best of us.
We grew up watching our dad do it. We even tried it as a kid. It’s basically a passage to manhood. Yes, shaving. But what we’re talking about is what you do after the shave: the dreaded aftershave!
Our shaving regimen has always consisted of applying shaving cream, shaving and finishing by slapping on some alcohol-based aftershave, a la Kevin McCallister. That’s where the problem lies. That stinging sensation you feel when you apply the it is the alcohol in the aftershave. It helps with closing your pores and prevents infection in any cuts.
What you don’t know is that alcohol-based aftershave is drying the heck out of your skin! Think about it… If you apply that stuff everyday or every other day, your skin dries up and it almost hurts when you smile because of how dry your skin has become.
We have so many other options that our dads and grandpas didn’t have. We recommend going with something less harsh on the face and more soothing, like a post-shaving balm. Using shaving balm helps to soothe and moisturize your skin. Try to stay away from balms that also have fragrance, as that also tends to dry out your skin.
If you get several cuts after a shave then go ahead and apply aftershave but don’t drown your face in it. Pour a couple drops of aftershave on a cotton ball and lightly dab your face with it. Let it dry completely and then apply the post-shaving balm.
Voilà! You’ll soon notice how soft your skin feels and looks. Plus, your face will thank you as you get older.
